As of October 2, 2013, enrollment at CHS was 3500 students. This is close to capacity for current staffing, and nearing capacity for facilities.
The Chaffey Academic Decathlon Black Team won 1st place in San Bernardino County for the third year in a row and the fifth year out of six years. A Chaffey student, Edgar Ibarra, had the highest score in the County. The team now advanced to the state competition in March 2014.
Construction on campus
In 2013 voters passed Measure P, authorizing the issuance of bonds for modernizing buildings on all campuses within the Chaffey Joint Union High School District. Because CHS is the oldest school in the district, it is receiving a proportionally larger share of the bond proceeds. Because of the historic nature of the buildings on campus, modernization will be done in the context of preserving the architecture and other historic features of the buildings.
The first building to be modernized is Gardiner W. Spring Auditorium. During the summer of 2013, work began on the classrooms in GWS, currently being used by the Theater Arts department. Completion of the work was delayed by several months when both lead paint and asbestos were found, requiring mitigation but is now complete.
During the balance of 2014 and 2015, a modern HVAC system will be installed in GWS Auditorium, which will then be air conditioned for the first time. Later, work will be done on the ceiling, which also contains asbestos.
The climate on campus is good, with students behaving and teacher moral up.
