The Board of Directors of the Chaffey High School Alumni Association is pleased to announce that Thomas A. Moore, M.D., Class of 1965, has been selected as the 2015 Tiger of the Year. Tom was nominated by his classmates and former Tigers of the Year Gary ’65 and Sue Olinger Ovitt ’65.
While at CHS, Tom was ASB President, a member of the Marching Tiger Band and on the water polo team, all while maintaining excellent grades and having a girlfriend – Peggy Personius ’65, whom he later married. Tom served as Valedictorian of the Class of 1965 and earned a four-year NROTC (Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps) scholarship to Yale. During the Vietnam War, he served as an officer on nuclear submarines, then returned to Yale where he earned his MD degree in 1979. He completed his residency and fellowship training at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego and the UC San Diego School of Medicine. He is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine.
While Tom was in medical school, Peggy (who is a registered nurse) worked as a director of family planning in Connecticut. When they returned to California after Tom graduated, Peggy worked as a an instructor/nurse in a midwife program at UCSD and as a nurse practitioner in Student Health at UCSD until her retirement in 2003.
Tom’s medical career has been in the specialized area of maternal-fetal health. He provides prenatal care for women with high-risk pregnancies and is a nationally-recognized expert on pregnancy and diabetes. His research centers on optimal management of diabetes in pregnancy, prenatal diagnaosis of fetal abnormalities and the clinical quantitation and assessment of amniotic fluid volume. He has authored and co-authored many peer-reviewed journal articles and chapters in major medical textbooks.
In addition to his clinical practice, Tom serves as dean of clinical affairs and CEO of the UC San Diego Faculty Practice. He is responsible for ensuring that UC San Diego Health System’s clinical programs and activities achieve the highest standards of service, quality, safety, compliance and overall performance.
Tom believes that service to society, especially the underserved, is the highest possible goal. As a physician, he has a unique opportunity to contribute to the personal health and well-being of his patients. In his words, “My strongest commitment is assisting mothers achieve their goals in birthing healthy babies. It’s very gratifying to help women understand how pregnancy affects their bodies and what they can do to ensure the outcome of their pregnancies.â€
Tom and Peggy live in Coronado, California and have five grown children and 12 grandchildren. Tom is an accomplished photographer, plays drums in a jazz group, and he and Peggy love to sail.
